This is my (Jake Kreis') Creative Critical Response for my final task. The video attached below is me answering questions about my film, the process, and what I've learned. This also contains clips from the film making process.

Final Task: Monster-By-The-Sea

Image
This is my final task for AICE MEDIA STUDIES AS Level. I have worked very hard getting this project to the state it is now. I am very happy with the turnout. It took a while to get it right, but I could not be more happy with the result. Looking back on my other projects this year, I've learned a lot about filmmaking and production. I would like to thank my mom and my friend Tekla for all the help on the project. I couldn't have done it alone. There were a lot of bumps in the road, but we prevailed. There were multiple reshoots of scenes. My actors were very cooperative and could not have made the filming process easier. I ended up with a lot more film than I knew what to do with. The most challenging part of the entire process was getting everything to fit within the two minute time-frame. There were many scenes that didn't make the cuts. As much as I wish I could show everything, I don't think the film could have came out any better than it did. I ended up having to

Production Blog: Finished Editing

Image
I am happy to say that I have finished the editing process. My project is now complete. I may now rest in peace, knowing that I did everything I could. Looking over everything, it is perfect the way it is. I spent a lot of time on the titles. They took up more time than I anticipated. They stretched way past when I wanted. They ran long, but they weren't as distracting as I thought. Because a lot happens in a short amount of time, it is hard to really focus on the titles. Next I put filters on everything. They weren't too dramatic but made it easy to tell when the monster's POV was on. I put dark guitar over the entire movie. I split the music up at parts and adjusted the volumes. I did this so that you could hear the dialogue and other background noises. I added in growling when necessary. I added a voiceover of my mom yelling my name. I shortened most of the walking clips down. I sped up most of the clips involving walking or movement. I added in a slowly fading scream a

Production Blog: Initial Editing

I took a few days off once I got done with filming. I figured I deserved the break. I used the time to think about some of the editing that I could use. I maybe should've gotten ahead, but nonetheless I got a good amount done today. I have a good idea of what this film needs now to bring it to completion. I have a lot of shortening to do to all of the clips. I created a version that stays under two minutes without speeding up any of the clips. It does not capture as much as I would want. I took over ten minutes of film in total. This is including extras and the establishing shots. I would like to make use of at least 5 minutes of that film. If that means I have to cut clips down and speed parts up than so be it. In the two minute version that I created, it was difficult to catch on to what was happening. As much as I could take the easy route, I want to test myself. I have done such before, shortening a video over 2 minutes, to under 1 minute, so it is very possible. I started look

Production Blog Finished Filming

Image
I have now come to a conclusion in the filming process. In anticipation of future problems, I way over-filmed everything. I have multiple different dialogue exchanges between my mother and I. I filmed each scene in various lightings to give different effects. I was aiming in showing time progressively through a decrease in lighting throughout. Looking through the footage I have, this should be very possible. I feel very prepared to start the editing process. I have put the clips together and see that there are many ways in which it can work now. Even then, I got backups on almost everything, trying to pick apart flaws in the film. Nonetheless, I have a lot to do before this film is finished. I will need to cut the film down by a couple minutes at the least. There will be a lot of footage that goes to waste unfortunately. My goal is to start the editing as soon as possible. I've found that it's hard to grasp just how long the editing is until you mess around with it for a littl

Production Blog: Preparing to Finish

I should soon be onto the last day of filming. There should be no more reshoots necessary. I made sure of this by implementing all of the scenes into iMovie. It is easier to see how the shots line up and play out together this way. After adjusting what I had and cropping the videos to the length I wanted, I noticed a lot of things. First of all, I had way more film than needed. The dialogue with my mother alone takes up about 40 seconds after being edited. This is a problem because this conversation needs to be shorter. So, I will resolve to refilm the scene and make it only a couple lines. This should dramatically shorten the film. By doing this, I can add in more scenes to my project. As of now, my project stands at just over two minutes without the establishing shots. Hopefully after scraping some of the less useful scenes and adjusting the dialogue exchange, I will be able to add a couple of the shots I took. This will give more time for credits to roll. There was also some change

Production Blog: Third Day of Filming

I am happy to say that today was a success. I got a large portion of the filming done for. There is only some small scenes that need fixing. I have a couple scenes that I left out. The scenes with dialogue with my mom need to be adjusted. There were a couple with bad background noise. Also a couple of the scenes she wasn't in the right place. I got done with most of the walking scenes. There is still one dialogue scene between my mother and I that needs to be filmed at night. It is difficult to film in groups of people without catching people talking or background noise. For instance, in the exchange with my mom and I, the TV is on and you can hear it. In the very next moment, because there is a cut, the noise from the TV doesn't align. The same applies to when my brother or father are talking. Inconsistencies like this make it difficult to make the film align properly. In addition to this, the dialogue ended up taking up more time than I anticipated. This creates a problem be
