Commercial Creative Critical Reflection
1. My project uses conventions of the humor genre to project and exaggerate its point. When I click on the ad, I do not have an extended reaction, but it is still relatable. My use of the energy drink to allow me to do many pages of work almost instantaneously is subtle but humorous. The use of music helps to emphasize the positive energy that the drink gives me, the beat dropping right when I make the basket. My use of the filter helps to show that the drink opens up the brightness in the day to me. Because I am the only one in the video, you can see that I get things done without the influence of somebody else. Also, being alone, the humor is held in my actions, and is much more noticeable. The different angles I used helped to capture my reactions and the humor in everything that was happening. I made sure to keep the Bang in almost every shot to emphasize its value and priority as the subject. My product represents an issue that everybody faces: laziness. This product, as evidenced in my commercial causes a transformation for me to be a very active and hardworking person.
2. This project engages audiences by humoring and making a personal appeal. Through the fast-paced action and journey that is taken, they are intrigued and satisfied by the film. The audience, through this unique and entertaining ad, is curious as to the effects of the drink. They would be more likely to purchase one in the store because of this ad, and its presentation of the product. As a real media text, this would be represented as a commercial on a television program. It would fill a typical 30-second slot, and would be seen by audiences watching TV, likely something for young adults who would be more likely to purchase the product.
3. My production skills increased greatly through the course of this project, many of the things I learned from my interview video, I was able to take advantage of. From the first day of filming, I had done enough planning and ideas for shots that I could create many different scenes to work with and manipulate to make the video come out well. Knowing that I only had 30 seconds to convey my message, while filming, I tried to make all of the scenes as short as possible. Going into the editing process, I was confident that I had everything I needed to make the commercial come out perfect. I put my desired clips in order, having to cut out some scenes, and trimmed everything to be under 30 seconds. I learned how to add in and place sounds correctly, make better transitions between scenes, add filters, and add and time the music just how I desired. By the end of it all, I learned a lot about the importance of planning and being prepared right from the start.
4. For this video, the majority of the filming and editing was done on my phone. The only exception to this was the music, which was uploaded from my computer to my phone. I used the camera on my iPhone 8 along with a tripod to capture all of the footage. I used the free editing software iMovie to edit the clips and put everything together. Although I would prefer to do the editing on a computer for its superior function, doing it on my phone allows me to seamlessly upload and edit files wherever I am, even if that is while filming. I had done this on the previous project, and it works well and gives me little problems. It has very similar functions as anything that you could have on the computer and is extremely convenient. One of the problems I had on the last project was selecting the right files, but because I used different angles for many of the scenes, this wasn't as much of a problem. After making sure that I had everything the way I wanted, I made it a small file for uploading purposes. Once I uploaded my project, I was satisfied and amazed at the capability of my smartphone and inspired to do more and progress further to reach the full potential of this method.
