Planning Blog: Participants, Locations, Schedules, Protocols

Image
The participants that I will be using in this film are: Jake Kreis - Jake (myself) Kimberly Kreis - Jake's mother Miguel Restrepo - The monster Filming: Jake Kreis, Camilo Prado Editing: Jake Kreis Directing: Jake Kreis Safety administrator: Kimberly Kreis I would've liked to include more characters and a more diverse array of locations and things going on in my film, but due to the circumstances with the COVID-19 pandemic, my mom and I agree that limiting the amount of people working on the project would be most beneficial. My two friends that I am including in the filming process are in close contact with me regularly from soccer, and we are all tested regularly. For all of the scenes involving close contact, we will try to limit how much actual action is occurring to curb any injury or illness from passing. There will be an adult on site at all times to ensure our health and safety. Schedule: 3/8/2021: I will film the establishing shots around my neighborhood. This isn'...

Shooting and Sound Script

Image
So, for my horror film idea, I was thinking the shooting would go something like this. The picture fades in from black to this sunny happy neighborhood, as peaceful things such as the beach, green grass, and nice houses. A upbeat but somewhat eerie song is playing, and once the credits are scrolled through it freezes on a particular house. It quickly cuts between night and day and the film title is displayed upon the night sky. The picture is now brought inside the house, where a family seems to have just moved in. The scene is set in the kitchen where the mother is reassuring her son how great their new lives are going to be. The son is ignorant and annoyed with the new situation, agreeing with his mom to satisfy her. She tries to lighten his mood by talking of warm weather and beaches, but the son doesn't seem too interested. She tells him to go finish unpacking his room so he exits the scene. He goes to his room and is unpacking, and places a book in the closet. The camera pans ...

Title Research: Horror Genre

Image
For this genre, I chose the movie Silent Hill Revelation.  What titles are displayed during the opening sequences? the movie title, the director, the adaptation, the videogame, the actors. What images are prioritized in the opening sequence? they are black and white stop-motion images, where the angle is changing and unveiling gruesome scenes. What connotations do these images carry? These carry deep, emotional and physically straining moments, these images, although they are still, are somewhat hard to look at with the gore and violent means occurring. How does the film establish a feeling of the genre from the outset? With the dark tones, and sharp objects, teeth, monsters, and blood, horror is a very easily assumed genre that will take place given these opening scenes What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience? they use symphonic music to capture these stopped scenes and develop a very high intensity survival situation, and freeze very tense...

Title Research: Comedy Genre

Image
For this genre, I chose Kung Fu Panda. What titles are displayed during the opening sequences? the Dreamworks Animation Studio, movie title ("Kung Fu Panda"). What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?  There is animation of a Karate warrior which is portrayed as the protagonist, and voiced over by the narrator Jack Black What connotations do these images carry? A fantasy to comedic proportions when compared to the current state and life of Poh the Panda. How does the film establish a feeling of the genre from the outset? Because there is a epic battle painted, and the viewer is stripped out of this potentially amazing fight scene to a soup shop What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience? There are animals that know Karate, and they are voiced at the end by a old bird telling the panda to wake up, which is very off compared to the enriching context given by Jack Black to begin with. How has technology been used effectively? You want ...

Title Research: Fantasy Genre

Image
For this genre, I chose the classic Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.  What titles are displayed during the opening sequences? The author of the original, adaptation, the director, the name of the film, the writer, the songwriter, the narrator, the songs, the co-producer and producer. What images are prioritized in the opening sequence? they use Christmas trees, snow, stars, and Christmas presents. What connotations do these images carry? they carry a happy, nostalgic feel, with all of the old figures, gives off a magical, happy vibe to everything. It sets up a nice establishing scene for the film to take place. How does the film establish a feeling of the genre from the outset? By creating a scene out of all of these clay, paper machete type trees and presents, the audience can assume that there will be fantastical things occurring in this film. What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience? There are bright colors used in the ornaments are shiny ...

Title Research: Action Genre

Image
For this example, I chose the film Rango, which I just watched the introduction for, and you get a closer look at the intricate details and vibrant colors representing each character. I found this to be a fascinating way to give tribute to both the artists who help to create and animate the movie, and the actors who voice the characters. By setting apart from the typical animation style of the movie, the viewer's reality is distorted temporarily, and the normal can be appreciated more. They use lots of action shots with dull figures to show how far the development process came to reach the final product.  What titles are displayed during the opening sequences? The movie title, the director, the writer, the voice actors What images are prioritized in the opening sequence? Lots of colorful art depicting these characters mostly in action shots, in early stages of animation. What connotations do these images carry? These images show how far the production has come to reach...

Title Research: Watch the Titles Website

Image
It's fascinating to see a lot of the opening credits alone, because you begin to appreciate the amount of work that is put into them. Being at the beginning of most films, and typically not contributing much if anything to the plot, it doesn't get much credit where it's due. In animated movies or those that require a lot of artistical work may decide to show that and those people's work off in those scenes. Movies that show off lots of fancy camerawork may take the time to give cool establishing shots to set the scene. Sometimes, simple patterns and changing designs can be a way to encapsulate the viewer, while making the credits very visible. There are many different ways to present your opening credits, and every film is different in that aspect. There is a lot of freedom available here, so it gives room for a lot of creativity to occur. So, you have to wonder why the director chose to present the titles the way he did. What are you supposed to feel or anticipate fo...

Title Research: Art of the Title Website

Image
On this website, I saw many different and unique ways of introducing a film title. My favorite one that I found was the opening scenes from Raised by Wolves, which had breathtaking visuals and deep singing to back it up. Although it didn't show much of what the show was about, I was hooked into wanting to watch more. I also liked the title sequence for Out of Her Mind which used simple things out of place on a subway to demonstrate the woman's craziness. When she is the only one reacting to the music and colors around her, it emphasizes her difference to others. I also like the more simplistic title sequences, when they are smoothly transitioned into the beginning. I don't believe that anybody wants to watch a credit scene at the beginning, especially when it takes the mind away from what the film is going to entail. Especially for a horror-comedy type opening scene, I want to keep it mysterious, and not too crazy or experimental. I want it to flow right into the movie, a...

My Pitch

Image
Three mischievous boys sneak into a house, and end up getting trapped inside with something that keeps them from escaping alive. I like this idea because it is simple, can be filmed using very minimal extra effort, because it will take place at my own house, and should be a very convenient yet still fun idea. I can dress up a villain stuff around my house, which may make it less scary, or I could make it seem unknown and more creepy. Being able to manipulate the setting so easily, this opens up a lot of opportunity for creative freedom. I have a lot of blinds in my house as well, so making the setting extremely dark shouldn't be too difficult. I like this idea because it would be fun to make a haunted house movie using my own house, but this seems difficult to pull off well.  There's a monster in the closet of an 18 year old and he cannot convince his parents to believe him, and his fears become real. This is easy and has a lot of comedic and horror potential. This could be fil...

Starting the Final Task

Image
My name is Jake Kreis, and I am a senior at Fort Lauderdale High School. AICE Media has been one of my favorite classes this year, because it allowed me so much freedom to express my filmmaking creativity. For this project I am working with my friends Miguel and Camilo, and possibly my parents. I am working with them because they have experience in film, having taken this course previously. They can help me to portray every scene just the way I want it. I have worked with them before, and we are used to working together, so it should be fun. I'm excited to start this project, and think that diversifying the genre of my work should make things more fun. I think that acting in a horror film will end up looking more comedic given the lack of realism and poor acting. This is not a drawback for me, but a potential horizon to work upon. If I make a villain that is more laughable than scary, it'll make the project as a whole possibly more entertaining to create. I think that making a...
